Jan van Breugel, PhD
Jan was formerly CTO of Purac - a subsidiary of Corbion and leading player in the bioplastics sector - where he spent 25 years. At Photanol Jan is also heavily involved in the company’s strategic cooperations.
Klaas Hellingwerf, Prof.
Klaas is one of our co-founders and a highly respected academic microbiologist at the University of Amsterdam. He is very active in the early stage development work and strategic decision-making at Photanol.

Martijn Bekker, PhD
Research & Technology Director
Martijn leads our Research & Technology development at Photanol and he has worked extensively in industry for Nizo and Coco-Cola and is one of the founding team members.

Business Development Director
Ross has held business development roles at other early-stage companies and worked for a number of years at Jacobs Engineering. Ross works at the interface between the technical and commercial activities.

Sybrand has extensive experience in technology startups and development and is responsible for the realisation of our demostration facility
Aniek van der Woude, PhD
Aniek specialised in Molecular Microbiology at the VU Amsterdam, before starting at Photanol as a Lead Scientist. She leads the strain engineering team and develops the strategy for creating different cyanobacterial cell factories.
Wilmar van Grondelle, BSc
Director Pilot Operations
Wilmar has had a diverse career and is the man you go to get things done. At Photanol his key responsibilities are pilot plant operation and strain upscaling.
Ema Nemet, PDEng
Ema has been involved in numerous projects in the biobased economy, where she focused on design of bioprocesses and economic evaluation. Ema is responsible for process design, modeling and optimisation, as well as economic evaluation and market analysis.
Sabrina Botton, PhD
Sabrina is an experienced researcher in the fields of microbiology and environmental chemistry. At Photanol she is leading the Scale-up team that develops creative and sustainable solutions for improved cultivating conditions of Photanol’s production strains.
